My hometown Lucerne is a very pretty – I even dare saying *the* prettiest – town in Switzerland. Surrounded by snowcapped mountains, sitting on the shore of the stunningly beautiful cobalt blue Lake Lucerne, and sprinkled with bridges and an elegant and well-preserved old town from the Medieval, Lucerne has been one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations for more than a century. Lucerne is small and cosy, and whereas I find it exciting to explore new spots when I’m traveling, I enjoy returning to my old time favourite restaurants in Lucerne over and over again, many of which have been here forever. And in each restaurant, I have found over the years my one and only favourite dish to which I will always be devoted to. Here are the first five of my standards. Check out The Roaring Prettiness next week for five more to come.
Traditional Swiss and international cuisine with an Asian flair. Friendly staff. It’s the place to be in summer when you can sit outside on the coveted patio under trees.
What to order: Pouletcurrysalat (chicken curry salad) – I love chicken curry salad, but quite often it comes in a greasy thick mayonnaise dressing. This one, however, is delicious and light with big and tender chicken chunks, surrounded by a beautiful selection of fresh fruit. In winter, I go for the Thai chicken curry (very spicy!).
Authentic Italian and Spanish cuisine in an old style and low key atmosphere with helpful staff.
What to order: Gambas Pil Pil (prawns in a sizzling saffron, garlic and chilli sauce). It was my brother who told me that they were a must-try. And oh how right he was. I lost track by now of how many times I’ve ordered this dish. The pizzas are pretty darn good as well!
An institution in Lucerne and busy at all times. Galliker is a very popular spot for tourists and locals, frequented by young and old alike. Time seems to have stand still in there. The ultimate Swiss experience. Traditional comfort food. Love it!
What to order: I always switch between Kalbsleberli und Rösti (calf’s liver and rösti – i.e. fried grated potatoes) and Riz Casimir (veal curry Swiss style)
Nix in der Laterne
A hidden gem, located directly on the river front, with a homelike ambiance. A great place for a girls night out or a romantic dinner.
What to order: Chicken breast filled with herbs and pistachios, with red wine sauce, dumplings and strawberry endive. As good as it sounds.
Definitely one of the friendliest places in Lucerne. Modern Swiss cuisine with nostalgic influences. Almost all ingredients are locally-grown, and everything is star themed: they serve shooting stars for starters and dessert – a selection of delicacies in small jars.
What to order: STERN-Hacktätschli (Swiss beef patties) in the shape of – what else – a star. The closest you can get to homemade!
